MITCHUM THE POET

Tough guy Mitchum not only wrote plays and songs but also dabbled in
poetry. Here's one that he wrote when he was only 15 years old:

WITH MY SHADED SAD HOPE
IN MY TELL TALE EYES
AND THE FLEET FEARS
TRAPPED WITHIN MY BREAST
THERE IS NO LAST MERCY
THERE IS NO LAST LIES
FOR MY SWEET DUMB
DREAMING IS CONFESSED
TROUBLE LIES IN SULLEN POOLS
ALONG THE ROAD I'VE TAKEN
SIGHTLESS WINDOWS STARE
THE EMPTY STREET
NO LOVE BECKONS ME SAVE
THAT WHICH I'VE FORSAKEN
THE ANGUISH OF MY
SOLITUDE IS SWEET

Poem by Mitchum for his wife

With my shamed sad hope
In my tell tale eyes
And the fleet fears
trapped within my breast
There is no last mersy
There are no last lies
For my sweet dumb
dreaming is confessed
